Quilt Notes: For pattern templates for (A) BUTTERFLY IN ANGLES, see 500 FULL SIZE PATCHWORK PATTERNS (#303) by Maggie Malone, Stirling Publishing, 1985, though rendered as a square (illustrated left). Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS traces the wider, rectangular version back to the "The Kansas City Star," 1944.

See variation with print fabric in the butterfly with a solid in the background in Jinny Beyer's ALBUM (p.439-9, along with an interesting collection of various rectangular blocks). Brackman assigns the print to the background but leaves the butterfly solid. Solid on solid is gorgeous too, see the magnificent tiling (with center square below) pattern below.

Compare with another interesting block with a double diamond center, RAIL FENCE, and the possible Tao-like symbolism of such an emblem, also (THE) ARROWHEAD.
