Quilt Notes: BUTTERFLY IN THE GARDEN is one of a number of "DRUNKARD'S PATH" type quilt designs included in this archive. The design is illustrated in 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS by Maggie Malone (#4050). A similar block called KATHY SUE'S PUZZLE, but with a different light-dark arrangement (and an added piece in the corners), is illustrated with paper templates, and cutting & piecing instructions, in 65 DRUNKARD'S PATH QUILT DESIGNS, by Pepper Cory, (see p. 59 & 61) 1991/1998.

Drunkard's Path designs utilize quarter-circles (or sometimes 2/3) similar to the diagram left, which can be pieced in endless arrangements, and as here often combined with squares (see how in the ANIMATION). Notice the "hovering" of the butterflies in the overall tiling pattern (as above right and below) (as though there were some great meeting going on).
