ENTERTAINING MOTIONS
with Drafting Grid

The Answer of the Sea unto
The Motion of the Moon —
Herself adjust Her Tides — unto —
Could I — do else — with Mine?

~ Emily Dickinson

Quilt Notes: ENTERTAINING MOTIONS appears in Maggie Malone's 1,100 PATCHWORK DESIGNS, pub. 1982 (#200), as well as her full color, 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#920). It's also included in Jinny Beyer's exquisite QUILTER'S ALBUM (p. 144-3). All of these examples work with the same basic geometric layout as the grid diagram left, but the color schemes and dark and light choices render them each very differently.

The illustrations here are more faithful to Malone's version but with some of Beyer thrown in. The name of the design is absolutely a work of genius, and the sense of rocking in the turning motion (upper right) adds that double meaning of "entertaining." See below how crazy wonderful the pattern tiles!! Compare at this site with CRAZY QUILT and MIGRATION SOUTH, also ARRANGEMENT OF SMALL PIECES.

There are a number of quilt designs which begin with a center square and work rectangular strips around it (illustrated in the animation). Solids blend in very well with this pattern, as shown upper left. As Marie D. Webster points out (see OLD CROW), quilt designs are meant to evolve, to change names and transform. Quiltdom is highly creative, yesterday and today, it's all good.
