Quilt Notes: FRESH START is illustrated in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, #156. A four-patch block, it is fairly recent, and dates back to Ruth M. Swasey's "Stitch and Sew Quilts," 1983. The beauty of the design resides in its tilt, departing from the usual bilateral symmetry, off-center, oriented toward one side. The pattern is similar to various tree designs constructed in the same manner, except almost always leaning to the right — that's because in the West we read the written word from left to right. Thus this block would seem to lean backwards, perhaps symbolic of a return to something familiar where we've been before, but we need to start over again, like renewing an old friendship, or reworking a creative project with new ideas.

The 4-dot, red and grey fabric, worked into the center of the illustrations left and upper right is an example of what is called "fussy cutting" (where the block design incorporates a fabric motif into the structure of the quilt pattern itself). See more on the technique at Material Culture.
