Quilt Notes: GARDENER'S PRIZE appears to be unique to 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, Maggie Malone's bright and beautiful, full color compendium, and located in her Nine-Patch section — see the first block on p.47. The balance and geometric orientation of this patchwork is exceedingly well crafted, as is typical of all of Malone's unique designs — for instance, her exquisite CATCH AS YOU CAN, among many others.

Note, this is not a variation of the well known block titled THE GARDENER'S PRIZE. However, there is a structural similarity perhaps to Nancy Cabot's INDIAN PUZZLE, illustrated, for instance, in Barbara Brackman's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PIECED QUILT PATTERNS (see #1769, in her section titled, "Misc. Equal Nine Patch Blocks").

For a selection of floral-inspired designs, see, for example:
BLUE HEATHER
    PRAIRIE QUEEN
TEXAS ROSE
    ROSE CHARM
ROSEBUD
    DOUBLE ASTER
WILD IRIS
    CATALPA FLOWER

See LOTUS BLOCK for additional botanical patterns illustrated at this site.
