Magic Carpet Cloud Design
(Japanese Arts Motif)
Quilt Notes: MAGIC CARPET debuted in print in 1982 in Maggie Malone's 1001 PATCHWORK PATTERNS, also later reprinted in her full color 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS (#2550, in the "Four Patch" section), without any other source of reference.
However, the designs that seem to be unique to Malone in her compendiums, are not only beautifully drafted, they often sport exceptionally interesting titles, for instance, SYMMETRY IN MOTION, and here again, MAGIC CARPET. Both titles refer, in highly creative ways, to quilt blocks themselves.
Certainly, geometric quilt patterns are filled with magical ideas, similar to mandalas, and thus able to transport us to higher climes, via the gifts of our awareness, intuition or imagination. Notice the rather mysterious, small rug floating in the center of the tiling design below — amazing magic!!
Compare at this site with Malone's exquisite CATCH AS YOU CAN and also one of her children's patterns, TO MARKET, TO MARKET — fabulous!!
