Quilt Notes: MIGRATION SOUTH is illustrated in Maggie Malone's 5,500 QUILT BLOCK DESIGNS, and is attributed there to Donna Meese, SSQ (Stitch & Sew Quilts), 1986.

As illustrated in the diagram left, there is something unusual in this design — the block has lateral symmetry side to side, but from the top to bottom, it is asymmetrical. All of the center triangles point downward, traditionally the direction of "south" on world maps, and thus produce a rare type of geometric quilt, which actually has a "correct" up and down alignment.

See RED SHIELDS, BIRDS IN THE AIR, and WEST WIND for other geometric blocks at this site, with a required direction, as well as pictorial meanings, which accompany those exceptional choices.
