Sophie Henriette Gertrude Taeuber was born in Davos, Switzenland in 1889 and died in Zurich in 1943 (photo left, dated about 1918). She was considered a leading figure in the Dada movement (defined as all things unconventional), in Zürich and Paris, and pushed the limits of abstraction in paintings, sculpture, and textiles. She also danced and designed sets for Dada performances. In 1915, at an exhibition at the Tanner Gallery in Zurich, she met the Dada artist Jean Arp and they married in 1922 and thus the change of name to Taeuber-Arp.

"In 1915, she began to produce non-representational paintings, which she referred to as 'concrete' paintings. The paintings were influenced by her training in textile design, as well as Cubism. At the same time, Jean Arp became a frequent artistic collaborator.

"From 1916–1928, Taeuber-Arp taught textile design at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts. Taeuber-Arp was active in Zurich’s Dada group between 1916 and 1919; she danced in avant-garde performances at the Cabaret Voltaire, an important center of Dada activity."
